Effective use of thin layer sediment application in Spartina alterniflora marshes is guided by elevation-biomass relationship

چکیده

Thin layer application (TLA) of dredged sediments has emerged as an adaptive management option for marshes that are not increasing in elevation fast enough to keep pace with local relative sea level rise. While there have been multiple previous demonstrations TLA, is limited pre-and post-application monitoring data available from past projects develop guidance concerning optimal siting, design and implementation projects. To address this gap, we conducted a controlled TLA experiment Spartina alterniflora marsh adjacent the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway central North Carolina. The project was informed by results long-term research program which had identified area particularly vulnerable experimental included triplicate meso-scale (24m2) treatment control cells quarterly (during first year) annual efforts document trends surface vegetative biomass. In addition, sampling characterize porewater chemistry sediment characteristics. resulted average gain 6 cm plots. Monitoring indicate gains achieved maintained over five growing seasons. response biomass added well-predicted elevation-biomass relationship surrounding platform. Treatment exhibited continued increases after placement, while cell remained constant. These illustrate potential tool resilience low-lying rise value elevation-marsh providing its use S. alterniflora-dominated marshes.

Mapping Spartina alterniflora Biomass Using LiDAR and Hyperspectral Data

Large-scale coastal reclamation has caused significant changes in Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) distribution in coastal regions of China. However, few studies have focused on estimation of the wetland vegetation biomass, especially of S. alterniflora, in coastal regions using LiDAR and hyperspectral data. In this study, the applicability of LiDAR and hypersectral data for estimating S...

Nitrogen uptake by the shoots of smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora

The smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora is the foundation species in intertidal salt marshes of the North American Atlantic coast. Depending on its elevation within the marsh, S. alterniflora may be submerged for several hours per day. Previous ecosystem-level studies have demonstrated that S. alterniflora marshes are a net sink for nitrogen (N), and that removal of N from flooding tidal wat...

A Generic Modeling Approach to Biomass Dynamics of Sagittaria latifolia and Spartina alterniflora

explore relationships between species of emergent aquatic vegetation communities and their environmental conditions. The modeling approach was used to evaluate the potential persistence of two desired — and quantitatively important — rhizomatous plant species under various climatological conditions: Sagittaria latifolia, common in freshwater systems, can produce tubers as well as rhizomes; Spar...

Use of lidar to study changes associated with Spartina invasion in San Francisco Bay marshes

Extensive alteration of the tidal salt marshes of San Francisco Bay has created an urgent need to preserve the few remaining areas of relatively pristine tidal marshes. The dynamics of these marshes can be quantified and mapped using the high vertical and horizontal point density of airborne laser scanners (lidar) if their data quality is adequate. We evaluated lidar’s ability to characterize w...

Use of exotic plants to control Spartina alterniflora invasion and promote mangrove restoration

In coastal China, the exotic invasive Spartina alterniflora is preventing the establishment of native mangroves. The use of exotic species, control of exotic plant invasion, and restoration of native plant communities are timely research issues. We used exotic Sonneratia apetala Buch.-Ham and S. caseolaris (L.) Engl. to control invasive Spartina alterniflora Loisel through replacement control f...
